9 Creative Vine Room Decor Ideas
1. Create a Bedroom Backdrop
Most just stick a small framed artwork above their bed and call it done, but there are so many more decor options available.
Large, dramatic backdrops are a great way to add character to your bedroom, turning the bed into a striking focal point.
To create one, you can use a different color paint or wallpaper style to block out a large shape behind the headboard. Or, you can create even more magic with vine curtains. A backdrop that turns your bedroom into a fairytale.
You can use strings of realistic-looking fake vines to make these curtains. The advantage of artificial vines is more flexibility, as you don't have to worry about water or light sources for the decoration.
Alternatively, you can install a high bar or shelf to allow vine tendrils to grow down and hang behind your headboard.
English Ivy is a great option as it is low maintenance and cleanses the air of toxins, even known to help those with allergies and asthma get better rest.
2. Cover A Bathroom Window
Bathrooms are warm and humid, making them ideal spaces to grow climbing plants. The added greenery not only makes the space more pleasant but also improves the air quality. This helps fend off bacteria and mold build-up.
Many species of vining houseplants thrive in a bathroom, including English Ivy, Heartleaf Philodendrons, and Grape Ivy. These survive low levels of natural, direct light, so they can still grow in bathrooms with smaller windows.
Vines look great over the shower (or even directly in the shower), around the mirror, or in a hanging basket. But they are especially beautiful growing across a bathroom window.
This is where they receive the most sun, and they can throw beautiful dappled light across your bathroom. One more advantage is the extra privacy it offers the users.
Place a plant pot on the sill and hook the tendrils to wrap over the curtain rail to cover the window with vines.
3. Combine Vines and Fairy Lights
When used sparingly, fairy lights make a beautiful additional light source in any room. And paired with vines, they look especially fantastic. For this look, only use soft white or yellow lighting.
Cool white lighting is too harsh, and multi-colored lights look tacky.
This look is especially magical against a bare white wall or exposed brickwork. Alternatively, you can use it to cover an unattractive wall without needing to repaint or paper over it.
You can also place this design behind a large piece of furniture, like a couch or bed, to create a bright focal point in a room.
You can purchase strands of artificial ivy packaged and ready to hang or combine strings of faux ivy with the lights of your choosing.
Use clear adhesive hooks for an easy way to attach the items to the wall without being visible afterward. Dress the wall with alternating strips of ivy and lights, or combine them into a garland.
4. Create a Ceiling Canopy
This project requires more effort than attaching vines to a wall, but the effect is well worth it. Create an overhead canopy with one large potted vine with long tendrils.
Hang the pot from the ceiling and, using small metal ceiling hooks, extend each tendril out, creating garlands that reach across the ceiling. For healthy growth, place the plant where it can still receive sunlight, or use an artificial grow light.
Alternatively, dot a few potted vines across the ceiling to create a busy and colorful space. This works especially well in rooms with high ceilings and lots of natural light.
Criss-cross the long tendrils over the ceiling to create a wonderful fresh jungle canopy above your head.
If you don’t want the upkeep of a large plant, create a similar effect with long artificial vines. These can also be pinned up easily, and you can choose from several designs for your desired color and density.
5. Weave Around a Lattice
Create a stunning wall piece from vines by purchasing a wooden structure for the plant to climb around. Vines wrapped around a garden lattice can work just as well in the home. A metal grid or frame will work equally as well.
For speedier results, grow the vines outside for some time first. Once they have coiled their way around the frame, the piece will create a beautiful addition to your wall.
A large lattice that partially or completely covers a wall is a great way to transform a room into a leafy paradise. You will need to trim back the vines regularly for thicker growth. This design requires a great deal of upkeep but looks incredible.
Put a spin on this design by upcycling a piece of old furniture and incorporating it into the design. Old wooden furniture, even if broken, can be turned into a dazzling, plant-filled centerpiece.
You can get creative with empty birdcages, a disused chest of drawers, or even an old coat stand.
6. Wrap Around Rails
Vines are climbers, so one of the best ways to decorate a room is by allowing them to climb. Bars, columns, and poles make great spaces to encourage vine growth.
Ivy, philodendrons, and arrowheads all grow well indoors, and a pothos plant is a good option if you're working with low levels of light.
Prune these plants well in spring, especially tendrils heading off in the wrong direction, to encourage growth.
Place a pot near or underneath the staircase and, over time, encourage growth up and around the balusters. This is another look that can be achieved with artificial vines, or by placing several small pots down the staircase, allowing them to cascade down and over the steps.
This design looks great with either sparse or full vines, so you don’t need to worry about achieving a bushy amount of growth immediately. With time, the tendrils will reach and wrap around the supporting structures provided.
7. Frame a Space
Vines can be shaped to frame a space or an object. Mirrors framed with trailing plants add an elegant touch to a hallway, bedroom, or bathroom. They suit any frame, from antique brassy gold to dark wood.
A canvas can also be framed and given a unique look with ivy or jasmine wrapped around it. This works particularly well on understated modern artworks, but don’t use it for detailed art pieces as it will make the piece too busy.
Encourage the vines to grow around the frame by clipping back tendrils growing in the wrong direction. If you need to add more volume, opt for a mixture of real and faux stems to achieve the look you want.
You can also use this to frame doorframes and windows. Place a pot of ivy near the structure at floor level, on the windowsill, or attached to the wall.
With small hooks, drape longer tendrils over and around the doorway or window frame to achieve a casual, chic look.
8. Hang a Pot Plant

Creeping plants are evergreen, keeping their color and brightening the home year-round. Shades can go from deep emerald greens to pale lime hues.
Species such as Boston Ivy will turn a deep red in the fall. You can grow Boston Ivy indoors, but do not let it climb the walls as it can damage them.
An excellent way to add more bold colors is to plant a flowering vine. Bengal Clockvines, Black-Eyed Susans, and Bougainvillea are just a few species of flowering vines that grow well inside.
Many climbers look excellent on minimalist white walls, so this is a great way to add another splash of color.
