Apple Vision Pro 2025 Upgrade: What’s New and What’s Still Missing? (2025)

Apple's Vision Pro VR headset has received a significant upgrade, but it still grapples with a critical issue. More than a year after its release in Australia, the device remains a rarity among consumers. The high price tag, ambiguous advantages over other mixed-reality headsets, and its confinement to the Apple ecosystem, which lacks developer interest, contribute to this scarcity. Despite these challenges, the Vision Pro is an impressive device that continues to evolve. With the introduction of the M5 chip, Apple has enhanced the Vision Pro, along with the iPad Pro and entry-level MacBook Pro, by boosting processing power and AI capabilities.

The software update, VisionOS 26, brings several enhancements. Users can now enjoy a more immersive experience with spatial widgets, which function similarly to phone widgets but remain anchored to walls. These widgets create a realistic and engaging environment, transforming ordinary objects into interactive elements. For instance, a clock resembles a wall clock, photos become framed images, and music albums transform into concert posters. One standout feature is the virtual window, allowing users to place panorama photos, creating the illusion of stepping into a past vacation.

Another exciting software addition is the automatic transformation of recent photos into Spatial Scenes. AI technology imbues these photos with depth, making them appear three-dimensional and responsive to head movements. While the results vary, this feature offers a novel way to relive memories, even if they are temporarily frozen in time.

The Persona system, a more realistic representation of the user's face, is another notable software improvement. It creates a CGI mask that animates in response to eye and mouth movements, adding a layer of naturalness to virtual meetings. However, the Vision Pro's original design flaw, a discomforting headband, persists, despite the new band's counterweight and additional support loop.

The M5 chip brings sharper and smoother visuals, running at up to 120Hz, enhancing the overall user experience. It also promises better game performance and supports Sony's VR controllers. Yet, the Vision Pro's content scarcity remains a significant hurdle. The App Store offers around 3000 apps and games, but most are merely floating iPads. Video content consumption is the standout feature, but the limited content availability diminishes its appeal.

The high price of $6000 is another major obstacle. Despite its advanced features, the Vision Pro's cost makes it difficult to justify, especially when compared to other devices that offer similar or even superior capabilities at a lower price. The competition is fierce, with Meta's Quest 3S offering a more mature product at a fraction of the cost. Microsoft's Mixed Reality Link for Windows 11 further challenges Apple, providing a seamless virtual display experience.

Samsung's upcoming headset, based on Google's Android XR software, is set to be a strong contender, offering a more open ecosystem and competitive pricing. Apple's success hinges on attracting developers to create software for its headset, as chip upgrades alone won't be sufficient to compete in the market.
