It appears that anything goes as far as decorating is concerned, depending on personal tastes – but the consistent theme across the board is to focus more on creating a restful haven as we reach the halfway point of the year.

With the spa-like Japandi style still proving popular and the best bedroom paint colours remaining favourable, several new trends on the horizon will create a bedroom that's truly your own special sanctuary.

Bedroom Trends 2023: 22 inspirational ideas

Your bedroom is more than just a place to sleep every night, it’s a personal sanctuary, somewhere where you can escape the stresses of the day which is why it’s important to ensure it’s a room where you want to spend quality time in.

“We are going to see a big shift towards bringing wellness, mindfulness, and spa-inspired design into bedroom interiors," says Faye Lister, the founder of Voshie. "We will be looking to wellness retreats and spas for inspiration and how we can create a calm and restful space in our bedrooms."

But there's also room for personality and bold design choices too. Here are the biggest bedroom trends influencing our sleep spaces this year and beyond.

1. Classic checks

The look is very much aimed at making your house feel cosy as the colder nights start to draw in at the end of summer.

This fine example from the new season George Home collection shows how the colour palette is a blend of warm earthy tones, from rich brown and rust tones paired offset by chalky whites. Checks play the lead role in this characterful trend but they are grounded by more fragmented diamond patterns to retain a more homespun feel, rather than a contemporary monochromatic look.

2. All natural

Maybe it’s because sustainable living is becoming more important to everyone, but natural materials are enormously popular for bedrooms this year. Choosing natural materials for your bedding, for example, is not only sustainable but also better for you. They contain fewer toxins and 100% natural fabrics, such as cotton, can help you regulate your temperature better ensuring a better night’s sleep.

“If you’re looking for texture and natural materials, 100% linen is a great place to start,” says Molly Freshwater, co-founder and creative director at Secret Linen Store. “Linen is a more sustainable fibre than cotton and its unique textured surface makes it a great choice, not only because it looks amazing, but because it feels fabulous too, getting softer and softer after each wash.”

Don’t forget your window treatments either when it comes to the all-natural trend. For 2023, it’s out with the opulent velvets and in with more rustic window treatments such as natural linen and textured sheers. On the flip side of this very understated trend, there's a move towards using wooden shutters in colour to make a style statement.

3. Dopamine dressing

While bedroom colours are usually neutral and calming, there’s a big step towards bright pops of colour in your sleeping space.

In the fashion world, dopamine dressing has been huge for a while, and the same theory works for bedrooms. Introducing pops of colour is the ideal solution to subtly welcome positive energy into your bedroom, without this impacting your sleep quality and quantity.

But how to introduce this into your bedroom without it being too overwhelming? One way is to choose a bright piece of furniture. "We are seeing more customers choosing bright-coloured beds as the focal point of the room and going for sumptuous fabrics," says Patricia Gibbons from the design team at sofa.com.

"With colour, it's important to think about layering the room with a mix of textures that add a pop of colour and tie in the aesthetic. Bright colours come into their own in spring and embody the feel of the season all year round."

4. Nature-inspired hues

If super brights aren’t your thing, you’re in luck as at the other end of the color spectrum are nature-inspired hues. In fact, one of the interior paint colour trends 2023 will bring is colours inspired by all things natural, from sunsets to plants.

Sam Bramley, Lead Colour Consultant at Lick says: "Our bedroom walls are best adorned with calming colour palettes and grounding neutrals in 2023 to help you slow down and be more mindful of your surroundings."

She recommends taking the look from the skirting boards all the way to the ceiling for a monochrome style that will look really pulled together and help give that feeling of being back to nature.

Helen Shaw, director at Benjamin Moore, says as well as calming colours, bold nature-inspired colours will be popular, such as their colour of the year, Raspberry Blush, which was inspired by sunsets. Deep browns and golden yellows will also have their place.

“Stark, strong, and striking, this look is both confident and simple,” Helen suggests. “They’re perfect teamed with whites and natural wood.”

5. Soft curves

Hard angles and straight lines in design are being softened by the current trend for curved edges, and it looks as though this soft approach is only going to pick up momentum for all aspects of furnishing bedrooms in 2023.

There's an added element of comfort to be found in arched headboards, rounded nightstands, and occasional chairs – all of which will be popular in furniture collections this year.

"We'll see a continuation of curves and round edges," agrees Sarah, interior designer at My Bespoke Room. I've noticed more furniture and finishing touches are softening. This also creates a function to the flow of a room."

Even the latest on-trend bedding has been softened to fit with the look of the season, with scalloped edges proving increasingly popular for the best sheets and pillowcases.

“Undulating curves have become an enduring choice for smart, timeless interiors with a playful, light-hearted touch," says Joanna Ross, general manager of design at Sheridan."Beautifully elegant scallops instantly elevate a design while adding a luxurious feel to rejuvenate a bedroom.”

6. Suspended accent lighting

Ambient lighting is crucial in any bedroom to help our eyes adjust to the darkness to aid a better night's sleep therefore layered lighting has always been key. The big trend we're seeing right now is 'floating' accent lights suspended over nightstands or wall-mounted on either side of the bed.

Practical on so many levels, suspended lights beside a bed are not only ideally placed to switch off without having to step out from under the warm covers but also they make better use of the nightstand and free up more space surrounding the bed – handy when looking how to organize a small bedroom better.

“Whilst untraditional, we suggest using your main ceiling fixture primarily as a decorative addition to your room. The main source of illumination in thebedroomshould come from soft, diffusedlightsuch asaccent lights," suggests Marlena Kaminska, designer atValueLights.

"Primarily using theselightsover your ceilinglightis more soothing for the senses and will keep yourbedroomfeeling like a space of serenity and relaxation," Marlena explains. "The golden rule to follow when using these options is to always directlighttowards thebed, not away from it.”

Whether suspended from the ceiling or wall-mounted you can create symmetry with accent lighting, by placing single pendants on either side of the bed. This will frame the bed and help to make your headboard the focal point.

7. Colorful ceilings

We're seeing a strong emerging trend for more daring choices when it comes to colors for ceilings, especially in the bedroom. It appears that interior designers are incorporating cohesive tones to that of the walls for bedroom ceilings to create a sense of cocooning.

Whether it's highlighting the undertones or the most striking shade from a bedroom wallpaper the trend is to break away from stark white ceilings to soften the look and give the space a more encompassing aesthetic.

"Coordinating your ceiling with the ground color of your wallpaper creates a harmonious look that feels considered and elegant and creates a better sense of flow," says Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene.

If you don't have bedroom wallpaper you can simply choose to continue your wall color up onto the ceiling to color-drench the space to achieve the same effect.

8. Textured design

Layering a considered selection of different materials when furnishing a bedroom adds interest and depth to any scheme while creating a comforting balance throughout the room. Incorporating natural materials is a key trend for 2023, which we've already touched upon – namely that of rattan.

Within the principles of bedroom design, this natural material is being used to soften the presence of prominent furniture pieces, such as wardrobes, dressers, and chests of drawers. This approach creates a more relaxed feel for a bedroom layout, where the bulkiest furniture pieces instantly feel less restrictive and uniform.

"Warm and tactile in tone and texture and encompassing the modern-rustic style, rattan has garnered new interest in recent years," explains Philipp Nagel, director at Neatsmith. "Our rattan door design, with its natural handwoven material embedded within a lacquered frame, is created with longevity in mind and instantly enhances its surroundings. It has an old-style charm set within a modern framework, that feels both fresh and timeless."

9. Quiet luxury

You might have heard the term 'quiet luxury' being used a lot recently, mostly thanks to the emergence of 'stealth wealth' fashion trends. When talking about the trend in terms of interiors, it simply means a way of making your home feel more expensive on a budget.

The nature of this trend lends itself effortless to curating bedroom decor because it's all about creating a laidback luxury by way of luxurious fabrics and understated, sophisticated colours and furniture choices. From silk pillowcases to luxury cotton, such as Hampton and Astley’s award-winning Egyptian cotton bedding, the best sheets can instantly make a bedroom feel more luxe.

To keep your scheme tonal and cohesive choose tactile soft furnishings and accessories that add depth to your scheme without having to add accent colors.

To adapt to the trend and make your bedroom feel like a luxury hotel look to pile on the pillows and choose oversized bedding solutions, so your bed is swamped in irresistible layers of comfort.

10. Thoughtful layering

The Japandi bedroom trend uses different textures to create a zen-like feel, layering texture to make your bedroom cosy and comfortable.

“It’s all about hunkering down and cocooning oneself in comfort; something I think we’re all continuing to crave. Sweeping, curved lines ensure the range feels soft and warm,” says Laura Burnett from .

The first step when looking at how to make a home cozy is by using the right colors says textile designer Jan Constantine. “Colour is key, so shades from warm creams and soft terracottas to deep reds and oranges and the return of warm browns can all help raise the temperature in the bedroom,” she says.

It’s then all about mixing and matching textured fabrics to make it super welcoming. Jan suggests a teddy sheet or duvet cover to keep things snug. Or chuck a shaggy rug on a hardwood floor to make things feel super comforting. Don’t forget to make it tactile as well, choosing those textiles that make you feel snug when you touch them.

11. Art Deco Revisited

It may feel like Art Deco has never gone away but it’s back with a real bang for bedrooms in 2023. An easy way to add glamour to a bedroom, making a bedroom look expensive, Art Deco styling combines detailed touches with a considered palette.

"In terms of colour consider jewel tones such as sapphire, emerald, and gold, which can easily be incorporated in an existing colour scheme using cushions, throws, or even a statement accent chair in velvet, a fantastic texture harking back to the ArtDecoera,” suggests Faye.

The other thing that creates an Art Deco feel is curved lines, a feature that works well in bedrooms as it keeps things flowing and adds a harmonious feel to the room. “Curves are a super and well-proven way to add some art deco to your room without re-decorating the whole room,” says Molly.

And don’t forget your flooring – Art Deco is a luxury look, so go for a deep pile rug or carpet to provide a sumptuous starting point for the elegant flourishes and design detail associated with this look.

12. New tropics

(Image credit: John Lewis & Partners)

While biophilic designs were among one of the big bedroom trends 2022 bought us, in 2023 they will be back, albeit with a tropical twist! Think about incorporating vibrant, tropical elements into areas of your bedroom to give it a vacay-vibe.

Tropical prints have been fashionable for the last few years but for 2023 they take on a more considered, grown-up look that feels more luxury hotel than novelty. John Lewis reveals searches for fruit and tropical and tropical-themed products have soared in recent weeks.

"Pineapple searches are up 129% compared to this time last month with many on the hunt to brighten their homes with fruit print products and palm bedding’ and ‘desert palm’ up 200% compared to this time last month," one of the John Lewis in-house design team tells us.

Look for quick and cost-effective solutions that make a big impact when it comes to recreating the latest trend in a space that's already decorated. Adding a rug for instance is a great way to elevate neutral flooring to add an instant pop of pattern or accent color. You can layer this even further by adding a set of complementary bed linen and accessories to unify the look.

13. Headboard walls

In 2023, headboards are going XL. “Headboard walls are becoming hugely popular,” says Laura from Feather and Black. “A headboard is often the centerpiece of your bedroom and a larger headboard, or headboard wall undoubtedly determines the feel of a space. By using panelling, or a neutral-toned headboard, you can add a huge amount of luxury and elegance to the room.”

While these headboards work really well in larger bedrooms, Suzanne Kugler, Buyer for mattressesandheadboards at Dreams says it’s actually a trend that can work in all sizes of bedrooms.

“If you have asmaller bedroom, it makes the sleeping area feel extra special without taking up valuable square footage so having something comforting yet stylish helps to co-create a cosy space,” says Suzanne.

What’s more, if you get a headboard wall built bespoke, you can extra storage into it, which is a great solution for organizing a small space.

14. Grandma chic

Bedroom trends 2023: 22 comforting designs and on-trend colours to inspire (14)

With the upturn in thrifting and upcycling furniture, it’s probably no big surprise that this trend is coming into its own.

To get the look, think frills, lace, and the all-important florals, which Lucy Ackroyd, head of design atChristy, says are the mainstay for this trend.

“Floral bedding is a must to achieve this aesthetic and to elevate the look to its full potential, choose fitted bed sheets that come with over-the-top frills to add texture," she advises. "Furthermore, treat your bedside table to a tasselled lampshade"

Another way to get an injection of vintage florals is to introduce granny-esque patterns into curtains or rugs – a perfect solution if floral wallpaper is too much for your tastes!

“Choosing statement flooring is a clever way of grounding the look,” says Jemma from Carpetright. "For those looking to spruce up a room adding a rug is a simple way of achieving this look, however, for a statement look that lends a touch of luxury to proceedings, there's nothing like a beautifully patterned wall-to-wall carpet. It helps to elevate the look and feel of the space and provides pattern and colour for all the other accessories and decor to combine with."

15. All out Maximalism

Bedroom trends 2023: 22 comforting designs and on-trend colours to inspire (15)

For those who love over-the-top design rejoice as 2023 is the year of maximalism, where more is more! Think murals, ornate on-trend wallpapers, and statement lights.

“In stark contrast to the simple design trend is the continuation of the maximalist trend mixing bright colours and bold silhouettes and patterns," says Tracey of Where Saints Go. "This trend is only for the bold and extrovert personalities amongst us, and a certain level of design skill is required to pull this off."

To dip your toe in the trend, Lucy from Christy says a showcase wall is a great way to start. “If you have a show-stopping wall in your bedroom, you can mirror the design within your bed linen. For example, if you have a floral pattern on your feature wall, use a duvet cover with subtle botanical prints to achieve balance and harmony within the room,” she says.

Lighting is another great way to create a maximalist feel. Ditch the sleek lights and instead opt for a statement chandelier. “We have seen a notable uptake in customers utilizing oversized statement chandeliers in the bedroom for a more dramatic look,” says Jo Plant, Head of Design at lighting company Pooky.

16. Relaxing seating areas

While the bed is obviously the focal point in any bedroom the spotlight is on chairs this year. It’s going to become even more important in bedrooms come 2023, with whole seating areas being totally on-trend.

As bedroom trends are about sanctuary and ritual in 2023, seating in the bedroom is going beyond the simple occasional chair, instead, loveseats or small couches are likely to prove more popular as we look to spend more time in the bedroom doing activities that boost our sense of wellness and calm.

This more generous style of seating will be more like a welcoming hug than the functional seating we’re used to seeing in bedrooms. Contemporary design and plenty of curves will mean they make more of a statement while softening the overall aesthetic (more on that in a minute)

Getting bespoke, built-in seats is the dream, but if space is limited, a cushioned bench — perhaps at the end of the bed — is a great alternative. Pile super soft, touchable cushions and throws on the top to make it a restful place to read or relax before bedtime.

17. Mediterranean escapes

When we looked at the outdated trends for 2023, we found that farmhouse chic was being outshone by the trend for the Mediterranean style, especially in bedrooms where the calming influences can be most appreciated. Searches for 'Mediterranean bedrooms' on Pinterest are up 70% since this time last year.

“Choosing warm, earthy colours will be essential in making this style come to life," says Brian Dillon, interior expert at luxury bed company Crafted Beds. "The Mediterranean style is all about warmth and richness. To create this vibe in your bedroom, opt for warm, earthy colours like terracotta, ochre, and olive green. These colours are reminiscent of the sun-kissed landscape and will bring a cosy, inviting feel to the room."

"Similarly to a beachy bedroom, try to incorporate natural materials. Wood, stone, and terracotta are perfect for furniture and decor items," Brian advises. "You can also incorporate rich, textured fabrics like velvet, silk, and suede to add some depth and interest to the space."

18. Reimagined coastal chic

Coastal had never been so fashionable, from the Coastal Cowgirl fashion trend taking over social media to 'mermaid-core' there's a modern coastal aesthetic emerging, one that designers expect to see taking over our homes this summer.

With both 'mermaid-core' up 110% and 'coastal bedrooms' up 40% on Pinterest over the last three months it's clear to see a new trend for reimagining coastal style for 2023.

Matt Siberry, head of home at Pinterest UK, says “It’s great to see 'mermaid-core' enter the interiors space and it’s no surprise that the bedroom is where people are really embracing it. Calming blues and ocean-inspired aesthetics give the room a truly serene vibe and that’s exactly what you want when about to fall asleep. "

"If you’re not sure how to start your coastal journey, I’d recommend starting off by adding small beachy touches. On Pinterest, we’re seeing increased searches for shell and seahorse art - an easy, fun way to channel your inner Ariel!”

“The colour palette of coastal cowgirl features ocean blues," says Lucy Ackroyd, Head of Design at Christy. "Using deep blue colours for your bedding is really clever as it mimics both denim and the ocean.”

“Natural materials such as wood, rattan, and wicker are also crucial to the aesthetic to get that rustic feel. Don’t forget to decorate with plants such as fan palms and succulents to continue bringing the outdoors in.”

19. Walnut wood features

Already noted as a key flooring trend for 2023, walnut wood is making an impression across all surfaces in the bedroom right now.

From chic flooring and furniture choices to adventurous feature walls the tone to consider for any wooden furnishing is walnut. This warming shade of dark wood offers a homely, comforting feel to create a serene space for a better night's sleep.

Naturewall has captured the look perfectly with its example of half-height wood wall panelling behind the bed, the presence of which helps make a bedroom look more expensive by way of making the bedroom feel like a luxury hotel room.

“The warm undertones found in walnut create a welcoming atmosphere complimentary to a vast range of interior styles," says Olivia Crosher, interior designer here at Naturewall. "Layering organic textures such as linen and stone with walnut is a simple way to establish a connection to nature in your home, the key to creating a serene sanctuary.”

20. Stylish 70s inspired design

From rattan headboards and nightstands to rich ochre and orange colour palettes bedrooms are being heavily influenced by 70s-inspired interior design trends.

21. Custom drapery

An emerging trend we're seeing coming through on social media platforms just in the last few months is the trend for custom drapery.

From elegant fabrics suspended behind the bed to form an alternative headboard idea to entire walls swathed in drapes, the trend is taking over bedrooms in a big way.

We're even seeing drapes being used to zone bedrooms, making a bed feel separate from the rest of the room – no doubt as a way to make a small bedroom feel bigger by giving it different purposes with a rest area and perhaps a work zone.

22. Downtown vibes

Wall murals are becoming increasingly popular as a welcome way to add a touch of urban chic to bedroom spaces. Features walls are a blank canvas to make a style statement with large-scale wallpaper panels and artistic murals to add a wow factor to any scheme.

Paula Taylor, Stylist at , says: “The downtown aesthetic calls for bedecked walls, but creating these personalized displays can prove both difficult to curate and time-consuming to execute. If you’re looking for alternate ways to achieve a similar look, murals offer a stylishly sophisticated and modern take on this trend.”

“This summer we’re expecting to see elements of the ‘downtown bedroom’ trend begin to peak in popularity, particularly in smaller bedroom spaces," says Jonathan Warren, bed specialist at Time4Sleep.

“This trend has seen a huge increase in searches year-on-year according to Pinterest trends and is centred around creating a downtown feel in your space, emulating New York-style apartments - which are usually tight on space!"

“To lean into the trend, start with a neutral base such as an upholstered white ottoman bed or a wooden bed before adding your own personal touches to your walls with murals and prints."
