  • Powdered sugar
  • Molasses – Make sure to use light, unsulfured molasses.
  • Nutmeg

  • Ground cloves
  • Homemade whipped cream – See below on how to make your own homemade whipped cream. You can also use a 4oz tub of Cool Whip (or homemade Cool Whip, too!) instead, if you prefer.

How to Make Homemade Whipped Cream

You’ll need 1 cup of heavy cream, 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and 1/8 teaspoon salt.

In a large mixing bowl, whip the cream by itself until soft peaks form. Add sugar and salt. Mix again until stiff peaks form. Store in the fridge until ready to use.

Note: This will make 1 1/2 cups of whipped cream to use in the recipe.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Use Cool Whip instead of making your own homemade whipped cream.
  • No light brown sugar? Use dark brown sugar if that is what you have on hand.

Storage Instructions

Store any leftover dip in a covered and airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.

Can I freeze it?

It depends. If you used homemade whipped cream, then I don’t recommend trying to freeze it. The consistency will change.

If you use Cool Whip, go ahead and freeze for up to three months in a freezer safe container.

How long can I leave this dip out?

The general rule of thumb is to not let anything sit out for longer than 2 hours for food safety. If it’s over that time, please put the leftovers in the fridge.

Recipe Tips

  • Use Cool Whip if you are short on time. This way, you won’t have to prepare the homemade whipped cream.
  • If you plan to freeze the recipe later, use Cool Whip because whipped cream does not freeze well.
  • If you don’t own a hand mixer (or stand mixer), you can mix the ingredients together with a whisk.
  • Don’t use the hand mixer when you add the whipped cream. Use a scraper spatula to keep the consistency light and fluffy.
  • When you are making the whipped cream, make sure to whip to the point where it forms soft peaks. This means when you take the whisk off the cream, some of it will try to form a peak but then fall back a little. Add the sugar and salt at this point and whip again until stiff peaks form. Stiff peaks means when you take the whisk out of the cream, it keeps it shape and you have a nice peak.
  • If you don’t plan to eat it right away, refrigerate it until you are ready. It will soften more as it sits out.
