Checking if your Lewis structure is correct

Just to clarify, a way of checking if your lewis structure is correct is by adding up the formal charges to get the total charge, and if the total charge matches the charge of whatever molecule or ion you are drawing, then you know that you are on the right track. And of course counting the electrons. Are these two ways the only things we need to do to ensure our structure is correct, or are there other methods of checking?

Hi! I believe that the "best" Lewis structure has the least non-zero formal charges on the atoms.

As long as your formal charge are in compliance with the charge of the atom with as many of the formal charges as low (stable) as they can be and you have the correct amount of electrons used; the lewis structure should be correct.

Seems like you're pretty spot on for checking the validity of a Lewis structure! You also want to make sure your Lewis structure satisfies the octet rule and your bonds calculate to the total number of electrons. One thing I would add as a simplifier rather than some other alternative is using some easy to remember element properties to check for, like hydrogen having 1 bond, carbon 4, and so forth. Hope this helps a bit!

Yes, thats pretty much the way to do it. Also if your molecule has resonance structures, you would use the formal charge to draw the most stable structure (whichever one has the most 0s for its atoms)
