  • Tigers' Akil Baddoo: Hits first homer of campaign

    Rotowire

Baddoo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 5-0 win against Boston on Thursday.

Baddoo was called up from Triple-A on Wednesday to fill the roster spot of Kerry Carpenter (back), who is on the injured list. Baddoo got into both games of a doubleheader in his first game back in the majors and hit a sacrifice fly, which he topped with a fifth-inning long ball Thursday. Baddoo isn't going to be an everyday lineup replacement for Carpenter, but he should get occasional starts against right-handed hurlers.

  • Tigers' Riley Greene: Goes deep Thursday

    Rotowire

Greene went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Thursday in a 5-0 victory versus the Red Sox.

Greene launched a two-run shot in the eighth inning to double Detroit's lead from two to four runs. The long ball snapped a 19-game homer drought that extended all the way back to May 6. Greene has nonetheless gone deep 10 times this season, so he's already one homer away from matching the 11 he hit over 416 plate appearances last year.

  • Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Allows just one hit in victory

    Rotowire

Flaherty (2-4) earned the win over Boston on Thursday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out nine batters over 6.2 scoreless innings.

Flaherty was at his best Thursday, racking up 15 swinging strikes and tying his season high with 6.2 frames. The right-hander struck out exactly nine batters for the third straight contest and recorded his sixth straight quality start. Though the win was just his second this season, Flaherty has been very good in his first year with Detroit, posting a 3.46 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 90:10 K:BB over 67.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Absent from lineup

    Rotowire

Perez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Boston.

Riley Greene will receive his first start of the season in center field, while Matt Vierling will occupy right field. Perez has scuffled in May, slashing just .244/.308/.354 in 22 games after he hit .302/.375/.628 across 15 April contests.

  • Evenly matched Red Sox, Tigers look for bounce-back wins

    Stats

  • Tigers' Mason Englert: Tosses two scoreless innings

    Rotowire

Englert tossed two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates, which finished as an 8-0 Detroit win.

Detroit ace Tarik Skubal dazzled across seven scoreless innings, then handed things off to Englert with a comfortable lead. Englert allowed three earned runs over an inning of work in his season debut six days ago, but he's logged three scoreless innings since then. The righty will remain a low-leverage reliever for now, which limits his fantasy upside, though his role could expand if the Tigers trade any veterans from their bullpen at some point down the road.

  • Tigers' Riley Greene: Reaches three times in doubleheader

    Rotowire

Greene went 2-for-7 with a walk, a double and two runs scored in Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates.

Greene did most of his damage in the first game, when he went 2-for-4 with both of his runs, then cooled down against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh bullpen in the nightcap. That's a microcosm of the outfielder's season, as he was batting .257 with a .911 OPS through the end of April, but he's batting just .204 with a .590 OPS this month. Greene has the talent to get rolling again, however, and fantasy managers will just need to be patient with the 23-year-old.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Returned to Triple-A

    Rotowire

The Tigers returned Montero to Triple-A Toledo after Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates.

Montero was dealt the loss in his MLB debut after striking out five but giving up four earned runs on five hits and one walk in 4.1 innings in the Tigers' 10-2 loss to the Pirates in the second game of the twin bill. He'll now return to Toledo as organizational rotation depth. The 23-year-old righty owns a 4.40 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through nine starts in the minors, and his rough debut could cause the Tigers to look elsewhere in their farm system if they need to fill a rotation spot later in the season.

  • Paul Skenes dominant as Pirates salvage doubleheader split by routing Tigers 10-2

    Stats

  • Tigers' Matt Vierling: Goes yard in both ends of twin bill

    Rotowire

Vierling went 4-for-8 with two home runs, three runs scored and five RBI across both games of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Pirates.

Getting the start in center field in the opener and at third base in the second contest, Vierling was locked in at the plate no matter where he was stationed on the diamond. The 27-year-old crushed a three-run homer off Jared Jones in the fifth inning of an 8-0 win to kick off the twin bill, then launched a solo shot off Paul Skenes in the sixth inning of a 10-2 loss later in the afternoon. Vierling has four long balls among eight hits over his last three games, boosting his slash line on the season to .289/.320/.503 with seven homers, 22 runs and 28 RBI.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Hit hard in big-league debut

    Rotowire

Montero (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Pirates, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.

Making his MLB debut, Montero showed some flashes of upside but got hit hard when he left the ball up in the zone, serving up a three-run homer to Andrew McCutchen in the third inning and a solo shot to Nick Gonzales in the fourth. Montero got the hook after 87 pitches (56 strikes), and he'll likely head back to Triple-A Toledo following the twin bill. The 23-year-old righty will need to work on his efficiency if he wants to earn a longer look in the majors -- he has yet to complete five innings in any of his 10 starts this season, at any level.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Blanks Bucs for seventh win

    Rotowire

Skubal (7-1) picked up the win in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Pirates, scattering three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

The southpaw was dominant once again, as he retired the last 10 batters he faced and didn't allow a Pittsburgh baserunner to get past second base. Skubal generated a whopping 36 called or swinging strikes among his 93 pitches as he produced his eighth quality start of the season, and he'll take a dazzling 2.01 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 80:11 K:BB through 67 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the Rangers.

  • Matt Vierling's 3-run homer sends Tigers to 8-0 win over Pirates in first game of a doubleheader

    Stats

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Resting for second game

    Rotowire

Rogers is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Rogers will take a seat for the second game of the day after he was behind the plate for all nine innings of the Tigers' 8-0 win earlier in the day. He went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI and has now reached base at least once in each of his last five starts. Carson Kelly will draw the start for the second game of the day, but Rogers has performed well enough of late to at the very least keep himself in a timeshare at catcher.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Out of lineup for second game

    Rotowire

Urshela is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Urshela went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the Tigers' 8-0 win in Game 1 but will get a breather for the second game of the day. Matt Vierling will replace Urshela at third base.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Sits out second game

    Rotowire

Baez is absent from the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Baez went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the Tigers' 8-0 win earlier in the day but will begin the second half of the twin bill on the bench. Zach McKinstry will occupy shortstop for the Tigers.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Recalled ahead of MLB debut

    Rotowire

The Tigers recalled Montero from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates.

Because they designated Montero as their 27th man for the twin bill, the Tigers waited until after their 8-0 win in the opening game of the day before activating him. The 23-year-old right-hander will make his MLB debut Wednesday before presumably heading back to Toledo immediately after the start. Over his nine outings with the Triple-A club this season spanning 30.2 innings, Montero has accrued a 4.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB.

  • Tigers' Matt Vierling: Could play regularly sans Carpenter

    Rotowire

Vierling will start in center field and bat second in the first game of Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

Vierling had already started five of the Tigers' previous six games at three different positions (center field, left field and third base), but he should maintain an even more stable role in the outfield for at least the next week and a half after the Tigers placed Kerry Carpenter (back) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. The 27-year-old Vierling has been one of the Tigers' top hitters in May, slashing .290/.320/.536 with three home runs, 16 RBI and eight runs on the month heading into Wednesday's twin bill.
