Get ready for a thrilling journey through some of Michigan's finest golf courses! I embarked on a mission in 2025, not to follow the typical New Year's resolutions, but to explore and experience five new public golf courses in the Great Lakes State. And boy, was it an adventure!
The excitement starts with that first glimpse of a new course, as you drive up and catch a preview of the unique landscape that awaits. That initial walk to the first tee, taking in the layout of the course, is an exhilarating experience, setting the tone for the challenge ahead.
While we all have our go-to courses, there's something special about the unknown. It's like that Thanksgiving feast, where the anticipation builds, and you can't wait to indulge in the delicious spread.
So, without further ado, let's dive into the five Michigan public golf courses I had the pleasure of playing for the first time in 2025.
The Orchards Golf Club, Washington Township
I visited The Orchards in mid-June, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. This Robert Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece has consistently ranked among the top public courses in metro Detroit, and for good reason. With its large bunkers, expansive fairways, and diverse holes, it offers a true test of golf. Even the rain couldn't dampen the fun!
Tullymore Golf Resort, Stanwood
Mid-August found me at Tullymore, a Jim Engh design that's all about approach shots. This course winds through 800 acres of deep woods and wetlands, offering a unique and challenging experience. The multi-tiered greens are a real treat, and you'll want to play them over and over to perfect your approach. It's a golfer's paradise!
Timber Trace Golf Club, Pinckney
Early September brought me to Timber Trace, a pleasant surprise with its new ownership and staff. This course is framed by woods, yet it doesn't feel overcrowded. You'll have ample fairway to work with, but be warned, a wayward shot into the trees or tall grass will be penalized. It's a great course with a fantastic deal!
Northville Hills Golf Club, Northville
Also in early September, I had the pleasure of playing Northville Hills, an Arnold Palmer design celebrating its 25th anniversary. This course offers a perfect balance of fun and challenge, with fast, rolling greens and visually stunning bunkering. Keep your ball in the generous fairways, and you might just sink some putts and make The King proud.
Forest Dunes Golf Club, Roscommon
Late September saw me at Forest Dunes, a true golf facility with an impressive 64 holes, including The Loop, a reversible course. Designed by the late Tom Weiskopf, a former British Open champion, this course lives up to its name, with most holes winding through forests and featuring doglegs. The par-3s are particularly memorable, showcasing the rugged beauty of the natural landscape. The vibe at Forest Dunes is impeccable, and it's definitely a must-visit for any golf enthusiast.
