Live updates: M6 closed near Birmingham after serious collision (2024)

A stretch of the M6 motorway has been closed following a serious collision this morning. National Highways said the southbound carriageway is shut between J4 (M42) and J3a (M6 Toll).

Rush-hour traffic is being affected. More disruption is expected throughout the morning.

Taking to Twitter, National Highways in West Midlands posted: "The #M6 is closed southbound between J4 (M42) and J3a (M6 Toll) due to a serious collision. More information to follow."

It comes after after a man died in a crash following police pursuit on the M6 over the weekend. Staffordshire Police said he was in a stationary traffic management vehicle when a car collided into it between junction 14 at Stafford and 15 for Stoke-on-Trent.

Fire brigade called to 'person trapped'

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the M6 after reports of a 'person being trapped' in their vehicle.

A spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: "Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 7.26am this morning to the report of a person trapped in a vehicle at an RTC between two motor vehicles and an LGV on the M6 southbound between J4 & J3.

"One appliance attended however there was no person trapped. One person was taken into the care of the ambulance service. The fire appliance has now left the incident."

'Very serious' incident on M6 - ambulance service

The incident has been described as "very serious" by the ambulance service.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman told BirminghamLive: "We were called at 7.13am to reports of a three vehicle road traffic collision between junction 4 and 3A of the M6.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Midlands air ambulance critical care car and an emergency doctor.

"A man was treated at the scene and he was taken on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire."

Emergency services respond to three vehicle collision

One man has been rushed to hospital following reports of a three vehicle collision on the M6.

A Warwickshire Police spokeswoman told BirminhgamLive: "We were called at 7.25am this morning to a report of a three vehicle collision on M6, near J4.

"Emergency services including fire, ambulance and Highways England are currently in attendance.

"One man has been taken to hospital by ambulance."

Traffic chaos as M6 near Birmingham closed for three hours after crash

A diversion is in place by following the 'Hollow Square' symbol via J4 and A446 south towards A45 Stonebridge Island.

Then follow the A45 towards Coventry, A46 Eastern bypass northbound to M6 junction 3.
