Munyagwa: KCCA ED Should Face Arrest Over 'Nakivubo Project', Urging Leaders to Prioritize People Over Politics
The controversial Nakivubo drainage project, linked to businessman Hamis Kiggundu, has sparked concerns over flooding risks and community displacement. Critics argue that political rivalry and oversight failures among Kampala leaders have exacerbated these issues.
Mubarak Munyagwa, leader of the Common Man's Party (CMP), has called for the arrest of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, criticizing city leaders for inaction and urging them to prioritize residents over political rivalries.
Munyagwa drew a parallel between the Nakivubo project and the Kiteezi garbage crisis, where then-ED Dorothy Kisaka was arrested, emphasizing the need for consistent accountability.
"The KCCA Executive Director would be arrested by now, just like at Kiteezi," Munyagwa stated. "But let's look at the other side: where were the Kampala leaders, MPs, and the Central Division Mayor? What did they do to prevent this?"
He stressed that leadership failures extend beyond technocrats to elected officials, who have a duty to protect the public from potentially harmful projects.
"Sometimes it's not about our political differences," Munyagwa said. "We should come together for the common good. Why do we always have to provide relief funds after loss or death, when we can prevent it?"
Munyagwa's remarks reflect a widespread citizen frustration with reactive leadership in the city, urging politicians to focus on public welfare over partisan interests.
Under the CMP, Munyagwa promises to prioritize accountability and citizen-centered decision-making, ensuring the safety and welfare of Kampala residents are protected.
